How to Prepare for the Visit
Preparing beforehand is essential to help your puppies or kittens have a positive first visit to the vet. For example, if your pet is comfortable with car rides, try taking them for a short drive around the block a few days before the appointment. This ride will help them get used to being in the car and going to new places.
If your pet is anxious or afraid of car rides, you can try slowly acclimating them to the car by sitting in it with them for short periods by providing treats and praise. However, it’s important not to force your pet into the car if resistant, as this could worsen their anxiety.
On the day of the appointment, try arriving a few minutes early, so your pet has time to adjust to the new environment. If they seem overwhelmed or stressed, ask the receptionist if there’s a quiet room where you can wait with them until they’re ready for the exam.
During the Pet Exam
The first thing our vets will do is ask you some questions about your pet’s health history, diet, and lifestyle. It’s essential to be as honest and accurate as possible in your answers, as this will help us provide the best possible care for your pet.
Next, our vets will perform a physical examination of your pet. This exam will involve checking their vital signs (temperature, heart rate, respiration), looking at their coat and skin, examining their ears, eyes, mouth, and teeth, and feeling their lymph nodes and abdomen.
If everything looks good on the physical pet exam, our vets will likely recommend some routine vaccinations for your pet. Puppies and kittens need vaccinations, starting at around six to eight weeks old. Therefore, if your pet is due for their shots, the first exam is an excellent time to get them.
