Pet Emergencies

Sometimes, the unexpected can happen and you may find yourself confronted with a pet emergency. However, you may wonder if your pet has a true emergency or a condition that needs prompt, but not immediate, treatment. At North Yonge Veterinary Hospital in Newmarket, ON, our team provides routine and emergency veterinary care to keep your pet happy and healthy.

Bleeding

If your pet has severe bleeding that lasts for more than 5 minutes, this is an emergency. Bleeding from the mouth, ears, nose, or blood in the urine is also considered an emergency. If your pet has a cut, but you are able to stop the bleeding quickly, you should still schedule a visit to the veterinarian to have it examined.

Breathing Difficulties or Choking

Breathing difficulties can indicate an emergency. If your cat or dog is struggling to breathe or has severe wheezing, they need emergency care. This is also true if they are choking, gagging, or coughing persistently. If your pet has a mild cough or wheezing, it’s best to contact our vets for an appointment.

Pet Sickness

Sickness in pets can also be an emergency. If your pet has more than two episodes of vomiting or diarrhea, or both within 24 hours, they need immediate medical attention. However, a one-time event of vomiting or diarrhea may only require monitoring or a phone call to our vets. A high fever or extreme fatigue is also a sign of an illness that requires emergency treatment.

Pet Injuries

Severe injuries, such as fractures, are an emergency. If your pet experienced a trauma, such as falling from a high elevation, being hit by a vehicle, or suffering an injury to the eye, treat this as an emergency. Internal injuries or head injuries may not be obvious immediately.

Other Emergencies

Other types of emergencies include seizures, heat stroke, and loss of consciousness. For any emergencies your pet may be experiencing, you can bring them to our veterinarians or give us a call so we can provide guidance on how to care for your furry friend.
